Dogs 0; Humans 1
This is going to be an extremely busy week for the Dedmon-Jasek household. Yesterday, the carrier arrived around 3:30 to pick up the pups. She clearly knew what she was doing and treated them with care. We loaded the crates into the van and then helped the dogs in. I have to admit, it was sad to see them in cages. They may have been in them when they raced on the track, but they’ve never been crated since becoming part of our family—over nine years for Oaks. They spent the night in a boarding facility, and this morning they’ll be at the airport by 8:00. Their first flight, bound for Germany, leaves at 12:30 and lasts about seven hours. There will be no “mile-high club” for them! Wednesday evening, they’ll board their second flight to Montevideo, where they’ll head to the Airbnb to reunite with us.
As for us, we’re continuing to clear out the house. Yesterday, Mikey dropped off the last of the boxes we’re asking family to store. The storage may be short-term—or last for generations. It could even become one of those mysterious collections of boxes passed along for so long that no one remembers what’s inside or who they belong to (okay, that got dark). I cleaned out the pantry and all the cabinets, then enjoyed a nice nap in the afternoon with Tyson curled up beside me.
Today is all about the final house cleanout, laundry, and packing. We have a few errands to run—one last trip to Goodwill and a stop to drop off old paint for disposal. When we bought the house, the previous owner left lots of half-empty cans and spray paint in the basement. We want to do better than that for the next owner. We’ll also put a few items at the curb and hope someone takes them. Then comes the real challenge: packing. We’ll see if everything fits or if we have to trim down again. Our neighbor, Steven, kindly offered to drive us to the airport hotel tonight. We’ll stay there before catching our flight tomorrow morning at 8:00, arriving in Montevideo at 6:40 a.m. on Thursday.
On Friday, we’ll pick up where we left off—working on our residency status in Uruguay.
